BAGHDAD - The Ahrar parliamentary bloc has renewed its threat not to vote for the 2012 federal budget unless its demands are implemented.

Head of the bloc Bahaa al-Araji said at a press conference yesterday at the Council of Representatives: "The bloc has visited today the Finance Committee and stressed on the need of the inclusion of these demands within the final draft of the federal budget and the committee promised us of the inclusion of these demands, but we insist on our position not to vote on the budget if the demands are not implemented."

Araji reiterated that Ahrar's demands include the distribution of the country's oil wealth to the Iraqi people, moves to keep the budget corruption free and strict controls over the movement of money, as well as the creation of 50,000 job opportunities.

Ahrar MP Maha al-Douri said the bloc also called for surplus funds from the budgets of 2004 onwards to be spent through a "special fund and through a mechanism prepared by the Ahrar bloc [for] the Iraqi people".

The Finance Committee is scheduled to present its final report today in preparation for the vote on the budget next Thursday.

Ahrar's demands were previously submitted to the Council of Representatives. The bloc belongs to the Sadrist movement.

Ahrar recently tried to bring the State of Law Coalition and Iraqiya List together after political tension between the two escalated.
