Iraq says its power-generating capacity is to reach 22,000 megawatts in three years, thereby putting an end to the country’s outages.

Deputy Electricity Minister Salam Qazzaz said the contracts signed so far with foreign firms for the construction of new power plants will help Iraq attain its goal of meeting its domestic power needs.

Power supplies in Iraq have been erratic since after the 1991 Gulf War over Kuwait, but supplies deteriorated drastically in the aftermath of the 2003-U.S. invasion.

Qazzaz said his ministry signed a new contract with a Chinese firm for the construction of a new power plant with 1,260 megawatt capacity.

The $189 million contract will take 41 months to be completed, Qazzaz said.

It is the latest in a series of contracts for the construction of giant plants across the country with capacities beyond 1,000 megawatts.

The latest contract the ministry has signed recently has gone to an Iranian firm. The $69 million calls for the construction of a 320-megawatt, gas-driven, plant in Baghdad’s low-income neighborhood of Sadr City.
