Maliki to international community: Let us fight al-Qaeda

Wednesday, 15 January 2014 13:08

Shafaq News / The Iraqi Prime Minister , Nuri al-Maliki called on Wednesday the international community to help his country in its war on al-Qaeda through drying up the organizations’ sources that adopted the majority of armed attacks in Iraq .

Iraqi army forces have launched since more than two weeks , a military and extensive campaign in the desert of Anbar to hunt down militants of the Islamic state in Iraq and the Levant " Daash " linked to al-Qaeda .

Al-Qaeda militants took advantage of tensions inside the cities and controlled Fallujah and Ramadi cities as battles are still taking place to restore them.

Maliki said in a televised speech briefed by “Shafaq News", what he called as the war on terror led by Iraq is against " violations and cannot be tolerated ."

Maliki talked also about the international organizations and States that support Iraq in its fight in Anbar and said , " all the people and organizations have stood beside us to confront terrorism , except for those who involved themselves in fighting against us as we are fighting to defend the world and humanity “.

The head of the Iraqi government called that the international community to stand against the countries and entities that support terrorism , and drain its resources , " so everyone would feel the world united to face this danger, And we will finish the battlewith victory “.

Al Qaeda-linked militants took advantage of widespread discontent of the Sunnis due to what they believe to be ill-treatment of Shiite-led government that invaded Fallujah and Ramadi cities two weeks ago in an embarrassing setback for Maliki .

It seems that Maliki's chances of winning a third term in the upcoming parliamentary elections in April pend partly on its ability to draw a picture of a strong national figure able to impose security and stability .

The international support for Maliki's efforts in facing al-Qaeda was clear on Monday when the Secretary -General of the UN Ban Ki-moon visited Baghdad.

Maliki (63 years old) who takes office since 2006, expressed his happiness that the world stands with Iraq in unprecedented manner.
