Joint UN, KRG Trust Fund Signed

Posted on 08 November 2013

The Kurdistan Region Government and the Integrated Coordination Office for Development and Humanitarian Affairs (ICODHA) of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) have announced today signing of an agreement to launch a joint Trust Fund aimed at supporting the Kurdistan Region Government’s development vision outlined in the Kurdistan Vision 2020 Development Strategy.

The official title of the fund is “Kurdistan Vision 2020 Joint Programming Facility”.

The Facility provides a mechanism for the Kurdistan Region Government to draw upon expertise of the United Nations System to support the realization of development objectives for and implementation of development programs targeting priority sectors including health and social services, education, employment, physical infrastructure and economic development. The Kurdistan Region Government is the main funder of the Facility, with the United Nations as a principal co-funder.

The initial projects and joint programmes to be financed through the Facility, amounting to over $18 million, of which over $13.6 million is financed by the Kurdistan Region Government, will support the implementation of activities in the priority sectors beginning in early 2014.

During the signing ceremony that took place in Erbil, Iraq, the Kurdistan Region Government’s Minister of Planning, Dr. A. Sindy said:

“The Fund will strengthen the development assistance coordination capacity for aid effectiveness within the Kurdistan Region and will provide one window for potential development assistance flowing into it”.

The Facility will serve as the primary vehicle to bring together and leverage United Nations support to achieve the Kurdistan Region Government’s 2020 Vision and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework priorities. It will facilitate resource mobilization and management for the Kurdistan Region Government-United Nations joint efforts for the Vision 2020 and provide a forum for policy dialogue on key inclusive and equitable social and economic development priorities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

“We are excited to team up with the Kurdistan Region Government to work together on reaching the strategic development objectives of the region and offer United Nations technical expertise to various Ministries”, said the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Dr. Jacqueline Badcock.

The Fund will be administered by the Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office on behalf of the United Nations System.
