Political crisis talks delayed due to failure to produce agenda

Erbil, July 26 (AKnews) – The proposed meeting to resolve the political crisis did not go ahead due to the failure of a committee - made up of members from the two sides - to agree on an agenda.
The meeting was due to be yesterday at the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani’s house, but has now been deferred to an unspecified date.
Maysun Damluji, al-Iraqiya spokesperson, told AKnews that the postponement is not related to any new tensions among the parties, but rather the failure of the joint committee to outline exactly what the disagreements are and what should be discussed.
Leaders from National Coalition (NC), al-Iraqiya and Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC) were to meet to try to overcome the current political impasse caused by the non-implementation of the Erbil agreement.
The problems arise from the failure of any one party to win a majority in March 2010’s election. Eight months of deadlock finally ended in November with the signing of the Erbil Agreement. This meant that al-Iraqiya’s Ayad Allawi agreed to allow Nouri al-Maliki to stay on as prime minister as long as a new tier of executive powers was created for Allawi.
This was to be in the form of the National Council for Strategic Policies, which would be able to propose laws and ensure"harmony and integration" of policy. However, disputes over its powers have meant that it is yet to be realized, and Maliki recently said that its implementation would be impractical.
