Demands to develop performance of free zones in Iraq
21/07/2012 17:49

ERBIL, July 21 (AKnews) - The director of the General Authority for Free Zones in Iraq today demanded developing their performance through the provision of facilities to investors to implement improved projects.

Iraq has three operating free zones: Basra in Khor al-Zubair, Nineveh in Flaifly and the free zone in Qaim in Anbar province.

The director general of the authority Sabah al-Qaisi said in a statement that he was informed about the investment projects in the free zone in Khor al-Zubair after meeting a number of local and foreign companies.

The region is witnessing the implementation of the project to store the petroleum products, one of the most important investment projects, establishing the sea sands company specialized in establishing warehouses to store cement, and market it and transportation equipment for oil projects.

The law allows free zones in Iraq to exercise industrial activities, manufacturing, repacking, storage and export, trade, services, transport and all types of banking activities, insurance and supplementary services and professional assistance.

Qaisi added that he listened to the opinion of companies about the projects and said that "facilities should be provided for investors and promote the free zones in the presence of high-level projects".

Khor al-Zubair is one of the major industrial areas. In addition to the port of Khor al-Zubair it includes a group of laboratories and companies, such as petrochemical plant, southern factory of fertilizers, factories of iron, steel and liquid gas.

UAE company ALE signed a contract with Iraq last May to invest in the free zone in Khor al-Zubair in Basra.

In the same month it signed a contract with Italian company M.G.M Lines to create two investment commercial and service projects in the same area.
