Official cites logistics, security as hindrances

AMMAN -- Iraqi Transport Minister Hadi Al Ameri on Saturday said Iraq has agreed "in principle" to allow Jordanian trucks to pass through Iraq en route to Turkey and some European countries to bypass turbulent Syria.

However, Ameri underlined the need for special legislation to overcome technical problems hampering truck movement via Iraq.

He said that "the transit system has not been working in Iraq for more than 15 years", citing security and customs issues that must be dealt with to ensure the safe passage of goods through Iraqi lands.

The minister made these remarks during a meeting of the Iraqi-Jordanian Land Transport Company general assembly to complete its liquidation, co-chaired by Minister of Transport Alaa Batayneh.

During the meeting, Batayneh explained that there are talks between the two sides to help Iraq benefit from Jordan's expertise in the area of transit transport.

Moreover, the two ministers stressed the importance of railway connectivity between Jordan and Iraq to increase trade exchange volume.

Committees comprising members from the two countries are examining the issue, and the two sides are coordinating between them to pursue related technical talks, the ministers told the press.

In 2008, the general assembly of the Iraqi-Jordanian Land Transport Company agreed to liquidate the company because of repeated losses, which accumulated to over JD6 million.

Batayneh blamed political conditions in Iraq for the losses, along with the depreciation of the trucks used by the company since its inception in 1980 with a capital of $50 million.
