Owners of companies operating in the oil sector are protesting to demand that their transfers be paid in dollars

National News Center/Private

Today, Thursday, a number of owners of companies operating in the oil sector in Basra Governorate organized a protest to demand that their bank transfers received from their parent companies be paid in the dollar currency or its equivalent value in Iraqi markets.

A number of them told the National News Center: “The business of their oil companies was greatly damaged due to the refusal of private banks to disburse their remittances in the dollar currency, which caused a delay in the payment of their employees’ salaries, as well as a disruption in the process of purchasing the logistical materials necessary for their work in the oil fields.”

They stressed that “if their remittances are not disbursed in dollars or at the local market price, they will be forced to stop their oil work starting next week.”

They added, “The oil companies employ more than 50,000 employees, all of whom receive their salaries in dollars, but they have been facing a problem with that for nearly four months.”

They called on the Prime Minister to “move quickly and intervene to solve their problem to avoid the serious damage it could cause to the Iraqi economy.”
