The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, confirmed, on Tuesday, that the area of wheat harvest, which was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture during the current winter season, has reached about ten million acres.
In an interview with Al-Sabah newspaper, which was seen by Al-Eqtisad News, Al-Jubouri said that the plan approved by his ministry for the harvest has allocated four million dunams in irrigated areas, and six million dunams in desert areas, noting that this year's plan is less than its predecessor, 2020, by one million dunams. As it reached 11 million acres.
He added that the shortage of crop cultivation area is due to the water quotas set for irrigation, after relying on the water storage existing in the country in consultation with the competent authorities in the Ministry of Water Resources.
The agricultural sector faces several challenges, represented by the low production efficiency of crops and products, which caused the emergence of a deficit in covering Iraq's need for food, and thus the inability to secure the requirements of food security, the weak investment environment in the agricultural sector, and the limited size of capital from the private sector in it.
