More Progress on “Chapter VII” Issues
Posted on 07 June 2013. Tags: Chapter Seven, Chapter VII, Kuwait, Security Council, UN, United Nations

By John Lee.
KUNA reports that the UN Security Council has acknowledged progress achieved by Iraq in implementing its UN obligations towards Kuwait, and will move some related issues from Chapter VII to VI of UN Charter when it meets on the matter next month.
Mark Lyall-Grant (pictured), British Ambassador to UN and rotating UNSC President, told a press conference that UNSC will hold consultations on 27th June on Iraq-Kuwait.
In contrast to Chapter VII, which threatens with “action by air, sea, or land forces as may be necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security,” Chapter VI stipulates that the Council shall “call on the parties to settle their dispute by negotiation, mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement, or resort to regional agencies or arrangements or other peaceful means of their choice.”
