UN expresses "concern" at the high rate of unemployment among the youth of Iraq

Erbil, July 17 (Rn) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Ad Melkert today to one, the launch of the analytical report on the status of Iraqi youth, expressing at the same time expressed "concern" from some of the indicators contained in the report, particularly with regard to the rate of unemployment among the young category.

ad melkert The report was launched at a conference Saturday at the headquarters of the House of Representatives in Baghdad attended by 300 people including 200 representatives of youth.

The universities of Baghdad and Iraq prepare a report in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and the support of the United Nations Fund for Population.

The report provides an analysis of the needs and perceptions and priorities of youth in education, employment, health, disability and access to media and technology, sports, security and political participation and participation in civil society and poverty.

A statement received by the International Organization and the Kurdish news agency (Rn), for Melkert said, "It is time to develop a vision, policies and strategies and action plan, Iraqi special youth representative on the participation of young people."

But the representative of the Secretary-General in Iraq noted that a number of indicators of youth development for concern as the percentage enrolled in secondary education only 21 percent and rates of illiteracy and unemployment among young high rate higher than unemployment among young people aged between 15 and 29 years of 57 percent.

Statistics indicate a high rate of early marriage, where the percentage of girls married between the ages of 16 to 18 years 42.8 percent, which increases the risk of infant and maternal mortality.

Melkert said, "This report provides the government and its departments of various important planning tool to address fundamental issues, which include infrastructure, education, health and employment, which will improve people's lives for the good of the Iraqi society as a whole."

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General Ad Melkert said, "concerns of young people are legitimate concerns about jobs and delivering basic services and accountability", calling on Iraqi decision-makers "to listen to the needs of young people and respond to their demands and legitimate expectations."

Made in this regard, three recommendations for consideration by decision-makers Iraqis when they were heading towards the promotion of programs for youth, which is to agree on an "Agenda for the Future" and set targets and timetables for policies that would improve the economic and social prospects for young people.

As well as a "platform for dialogue between young people" to include a wide representation of participants aged between 18 and 25 years to hold regular consultations with the Government and the House of Representatives, as well as the launch of "the employment of youth," aims to increase the number of young people who get jobs or training or employment opportunities for their own account on a monthly basis.

He concluded Melkert said, "Now is the time to work of civil society and the United Nations together in a coordinated program to reach a consensus on the prospects for the future of Iraq through his youth."
