Iran's Chamber of Commerce has criticized the way Iraqi authorities process visa applications for Iranian businessmen entering Iraq.

The criticism came in a meeting between Salah Zangana, an adviser to the chairman of Iran's Chamber of Commerce, and officials at the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.

Zangana said the processing of visa applications for Iranian businessmen was complicated and needed to be simplified to attract more Iranian businessmen. Zangana added that applications took a long time to be processed.

"Iraq needs to change its way of dealing with the business visas... to create the investment atmosphere so that it attracts more Iranian investments," he said.

Member of the advisory board at Iraq's Chamber of Commerce Union Ahmed al-Kinani said Iraq is abiding by the international resolutions that impose sanctions on Iran.

"Iran is currently under international sanctions. And everyone has to abide by these regulations though the Iraqi government has filed a petition with the United Nations to exempt Iraq from committing to the resolutions as the country has a long line of borders with Iran, in addition to the country's need of importing large amounts of food supply from Iran."

The volume of trade exchange between Iran and Iraq amounted to about $8bn (9.3tr IQD) in 2011.
