6/18/2015
The regional government in Erbil, Northern Iraq, has announced that it will take "legal measures" if the federal authorities in Baghdad do not cover its 2015 budget and solve its financial crisis, Anadolu has reported. "The government of Northern Iraq is completely committed to the agreement signed between Baghdad and Erbil," said a spokesperson, "as well as to the 2015 budget law. The central government in Baghdad did not commit to the agreement."
According to the statement, Erbil is willing to sort out all problems via dialogue, as it is in everyone's best interests to do so. However, if Baghdad ignores the situation, then legal measures will be taken, based on Article five of the 2013 bill approved by the Northern Iraq parliament. This stipulates that Northern Iraq can depend on its own natural resources to cover its budget, more specifically its oil exports.
The Iraqi government in Baghdad signed an agreement with Northern Iraq on 2 December last year regarding the regional budget and oil exports under which Northern Iraq exports 550,000 barrels of oil a day.Officials in Baghdad have yet to respond on the issue
