Baghdad / Iraq Observer
Economic researcher, Ziad Al-Hashemi, said that
Iran consumes Turkmen gas while Iraq pays for it.
Al-Hashemi stated that
Iran not only cuts gas to Iraq, but
also consumes Iraqi gas coming to it from Turkmenistan, and
Iraq must pay the value of that in any case. He added:
“According to the contracts with Turkmenistan and Iran,
Iran is supposed to receive the Turkmen gas that Iraq buys through its northern system, where it has a high demand for gas consumption, and
in return, Iran delivers gas to Iraq in the same quantity from its southern gas system!”“. He continued,
“But what is happening today is that
Iran receives the gas that Iraq buys from another country,
burns it and consumes it internally, and
does not deliver the corresponding gas to Iraq, and
Iraq must pay its bill and value to Turkmenistan according to the terms of the contract.” He pointed out that
“this serious defect in the loss of Iraq’s invasive rights shows the extent of the weakness of the Iraqi side in the way it manages contracts, implements them, and obtains Iraq’s rights.” He added:
“Previously, there was talk about a scarcity of Iranian gas, and this was an understandable issue, but
today the issue has changed and Iraq has been able to buy gas from Turkmenistan via Iran to overcome the problems of the past, but it seems that
Iran has exploited this gas to its advantage without considering Iraq’s interests and the contracts concluded with it!”. He concluded by saying,
“This means that we are facing a state of great waste in Iraq’s gas and financial rights that needs decisive treatment as soon as possible and by the highest authorities.
This is of course if there is someone who wants to preserve Iraq’s economic and financial interests!”“.
